Upload High-Resolution 4K Photos on Twitter Mobile App

Previously, Twitter allowed a maximum image upload quality of 2K or 2048×2048 pixels on its mobile app. However, it is now rolling out a server-side update enabling higher quality uploads at 4K or 4096×4096 resolution, which has been the limit for uploading from the Twitter web.

As noted, it’s not enabled by default, and you need to make some changes to your Twitter app settings. Below is how you can enable high-resolution 4K photo uploads on the Twitter mobile app for Android and iOS.

On Android

  1. Open the Twitter app on your Android phone.
  2. Click the hamburger menu at the top-left corner.
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Click on Data usage.
  5. On the next screen, tap High-quality image uploads.
  6. Please change it to Mobile Data & Wi-Fi.
  7. Similarly, enable High-quality images on mobile data and Wifi.

On iOS

  1. Open the Twitter app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the three lines at the top-left.
  3. Click on Settings and privacy.
  4. Then, select Data usage under General.
  5. Now, tap High-quality image uploads. Please set it to Cellular & Wi-Fi.
  6. Allow high-quality images, too, in a similar fashion.

Are Images Uploaded in their Original Quality?

Twitter 4K Uploads
Without 4K Enabled

To test things out, I tried uploading a 4000 x 6000 sample photo twice from the Android app with and without 4K quality enabled. In normal mode, Twitter compressed the image to 1365 x 2048 resolution (∼2K).

However, when high-quality uploads were enabled, it still compressed the image but maintained a higher resolution of 2731 x 4096 pixels (∼4K). The image had way more details, as expected.

No Option to Upload 4K Photos on Twitter?

The feature is currently in the testing phase and can only be enabled through a server-side update from Twitter. So, if you don’t see the option yet, wait for some time for it to roll it out for you. Another New Feature: Full Image Previews

Besides offering the option to upload 4K images, Twitter is also changing the way you see images on your timeline.

Till now, you used to see a flat landscape preview regardless of what the actual image orientation was. Twitter applied machine learning algorithms to generate a preview image focusing on the subject. However, it will now simply start showing the full image in the preview.

We don’t know if there’s a limit on how tall the images appear on the timeline. But there must definitely be one, similar to Facebook. The feature is currently in the testing phase and isn’t yet available on my device.

Wrapping Up

This was all about how you can upload high-quality 4K photos on the Twitter app for Android and iPhone. Do try and let me know if the feature is available for you. Unfortunately, video uploads are still lagging on Twitter due to capped resolution and compression. We hope that it will allow higher-quality video uploads in the future.
