What Lung Diseases Can You Get From Smoking
Most people, particularly smokers have been asking, what lung diseases can you get from smoking? Lung diseases are the most common medical conditions affecting millions of people globally. There are different lung diseases you can get from smoking. Factors like infections, smoking, and genetics, are some of the conditions responsible for lung diseases. The lungs expand and relax thousands of times daily to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. Lung diseases can result from problems in any part of this system.

What Type of Lung Diseases Can You Get From Smoking?

There are different types of lung diseases that affects he airways. The trachea or windpipe branches into tubes called bronchi. Some type of lung diseases you can get from smoking includes:
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): This disease causes difficulty in breathing, characterized by inability to exhale normally.
  • Emphesema: This lung disease traps air inside the lungs, leading to COPD.
  • Asthma: This causes inflammation of the airways and spasm occasionally.
  • Chronic bronchitis: This is a form of COPD characterized by a productive cough.
  • Acute bronchitis: This is an infection of the airways caused by a virus
  • Cystic fibrosis: This is an hereditary condition that causes poor clearance of mucus from the bronchi. It causes the accumulated mucus to lead to lung infections

Types of Lung Diseases Affecting the Air Sacs (Alveoli)

The airways branch into tiny tubes called bronchioles that end into groups of air sacs called alveoli. These air sacs make up most of the lung tissue. Lung diseases affecting the alveoli include:
  • Pneumonia: This is a bacterial infection that affects the alveoli
  • Tuberculosis: This lung disease is a slowly progressive pneumonia caused by a bacteria.
  • Emphysema: This occurs due to damage to the delicate connections between alveoli. Emphesema is usually caused by smoking.
  • Pulmonary edema: This occurs when fluid oozes out of the small blood vessels of the lung into the air sacs and the surrounding area.
  • Lung cancer: Cancer of the lungs mostly occur in the main part of the lungs or near the air sacs, though it may develop in any part of the lungs.
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS): This is a severe injury to the lungs which is mostly sudden, and caused by a serious illness. The patient may be placed on Life support with mechanical ventilation until the lungs recover fully.
  • Pneumoconiosis: This is a group of conditions caused by inhaling a substance which injures the lungs.

Lung Diseases Affecting the Interstitium

The interstitium is the very delicate lining between the air sacs. Tiny blood vessels run through the interstitium and allow exchange of gas between the alveoli and the blood. The interstitium can be affected by various lung diseases.
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD): This is a wide collection of lung conditions that affects the interstitium. Some types of ILD includes Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and autoimmune disease.
  • The interstitium can be affected by pneumonias and pulmonary edemas.

Lung Diseases Affecting Blood Vessels

Low-oxygen blood, also called de-oxygenated blood leaves the veins to the right side of the heart. The heart pumps blood into the lungs through the pulmonary arteries. These blood vessels can suffer from disease.
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE): When a blood clot in a deep leg vein breaks off, it travels to the heart where it is pumped into the lungs. The clot camps in a pulmonary artery, often leading to shortness of breath and low blood oxygen levels.
  • Pulmonary hypertension: High blood pressure can be caused by some conditions in the pulmonary arteries. The condition is called idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension when no cause is diagnosed.

 Lung Diseases Affecting the Pleura

Pleura is a thin lining that surrounds the lung and lines the inside of the chest wall. Lung diseases that can affect the pleura include:
  • Pleural effusion: This causes fluid to gather in the tiny pleura space between the lung and the chest wall. This condition is mostly caused by pneumonia or heart failure.
  • Pneumothorax: Air may enter the space between the chest wall and the lung, causing the lung to collapse. To remove the air, a tube is passed through the chest wall.
  • Mesothelioma: This is an unusual form of cancer that develops on the pleura. It emerges several years after a person has been exposed to asbestos.

Lung Diseases Affecting the Chest Wall

Muscles helps the chest to expand, connecting the ribs to each other and helping the chest to inflate. The diaphragm descends with each breath in, also causing chest expansion.
  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome: The chest may not be able to expand if you have extra weight on the chest and abdomen. It can cause serious breathing problems.
  • Neuromuscular disorders: Poor function in the nerves controlling the respiratory muscles causes difficulty in breathing.
